“I was ashamed that I didn’t have the courage to join the IRA – and the Pogues were my way of overcoming that.

Shane also told how he became addicted to heroin after turning to drugs to try to cope after the hell of touring with the Pogues made it “unbearable”.

And the rocker, 62, revealed in a fascinating new film about his life how the band came to their senses by playing Russian roulette because they hated life on the road so much.

The film is produced by his friend Johnny Depp and directed by Julien Temple and tells of Shane’s outrageous drinking and partying.

Superstar Shane has opened up about how, after three hit albums and a worldwide Christmas hit in Fairytale, alongside Kirsty MacColl, he lost his desire to perform and completely lost control.

Looking back on the Pogues’ heyday, he said: “We did 363 gigs one year … that’s crazy! When you play a gig every night of the week, it’s not special anymore.

“You find yourself going through the motions and you find yourself fooling yourself and fooling the audience. The Pogues became what we hated – a rock band.

“I didn’t see my girlfriend, I didn’t see my friends, I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life in a bus or a hotel or a dressing room backstage and waiting in a dressing room within two hours not, which justified all that ballooning…”

Things came to a head during the band’s ’80s world tour when the band grabbed a loaded revolver to play Russian roulette.

But luckily bandmate Terry Woods stepped in to stop them from playing the potentially deadly game where players put a gun to their head and pull the trigger – without knowing where the bullet is in space.

A grateful Shane said: “Terry showed what a real man he is by talking the rest of us into playing Russian Roulette. “It got to the point where we didn’t give a fuck anymore. We don’t know what we do or why we do it. I didn’t care if it blew up in my head, you know what I mean.”

His sister Siobhan told how Shane wanted to leave The Pogues “since 1988” because he fell ill on tour.

But his brother stayed in the band because he felt a responsibility to his bandmates – even as his antics only got worse.

This led to him stripping down and painting himself blue in a hotel suite in New Zealand, brilliantly brought to life in a series of animations by artist Ralph Steadman in Crock of Gold.

Shane explains: “We went to (NZ capital) Wellington and the speed there is ridiculous. It puts you straight into orbit.

“The hotel where we stayed was built over a Maori burial ground and I could hear Maori warriors calling to me: ‘Are you with us’. I then took off all my clothes and painted myself blue.

“I finished it by painting the whole suite blue including the bathroom. Then I fell into this psychedelic sleep.

“The next day my manager Frank (Murray) came into the room and found me naked, painted blue. He almost cried and said ‘For God’s sake, you can get the blue out of your body’.”

Shane also had to miss a show in Japan in 1991 after falling out of a van and going into a coma.

When he woke up the next day, his colleagues called him to a meeting where they asked him to leave the group.

They fear his reaction, but Shane – who no longer has to tour due to songwriting royalties – is relieved.

He said: “I went, ‘Is that it? What took you so long?’ I was out, that was the main thing, and I didn’t have to tour anymore.

“It’s like a heavy weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I feel like I’m floating in the air and I’m free.”

He added: “He changed from that tour. He left and never came back. He just didn’t come back, not the Shane I knew.”

As the Pogues continue to tour and record without him, Shane tries to adjust to a life without music – which leads him to drink more and turn to heroin.

He explained: “Life has no purpose for me anymore, drugs and booze are more important to me than music. It’s not about me playing the music I want to play.

“Later I added heroin. Heroin is the drug you use when life is so hard that you have to cut it out completely, and that’s why I got addicted.”

His sister said: “Shane completely lost control. He was in the street painted black with psychic marks painted on him. So I have to dedicate him to St John of Gods. It was very difficult.

“I remember when he was leaving the ambulance he said, ‘I knew you were stupid, but I didn’t know you were this stupid’.”

But Shane survived, and in 2018 he celebrated his 60th birthday with a gala concert in Dublin’s National Concert Hall, where a host of big names paid tribute by singing his songs.

His sister said: “A great musician who saved Irish music. I think that’s what Shane wanted his legacy to be.” The two-hour film tells the story of how his life changed after he left his idyllic childhood in rural Tipperary and moved to London.

However, Shane stuck to his roots, which he combined with punk rock to reinvent Irish music for a global audience.

Looking back on his film career, Shane says his music was “for Ireland” but feels his music career was a “compromise” to join the IRA.

The star, who insisted he was not anti-British, said: “I’m compromised. I shouldn’t have gone astray. There’s been an Irish revolution in every century.

“It was a revolution of the spirit. I was always guilty of not giving my life for Ireland.

“I was ashamed that I didn’t have the courage to join the IRA – and the Pogues were my way of overcoming. I joined the revolution as a musician.

Shane also talks in the film about how he once thought about becoming a priest, given his religious upbringing in Co Tipperary.

He said: “The Roman Catholic Mass is one of the most beautiful experiences one can have. I got very high when I drank the host, the body and the blood that goes into you.

“My aunt Nora, who was the religious head of the house, made me a religious maniac out of four who studied the Catechism.

“It would have been progress for everyone if I had become a priest. It wasn’t until I turned 11 that I really thought about it. I saw how the priests lived. Free house, free booze – and the beauty of a fair.”

And Shane revealed his biggest wish for 2020 is to “write more songs again”. He said, “I’m doing everything I can to write songs, but I’m out of inspiration.” Shane is now in a wheelchair after an accident three years ago in Dublin.

CROCK of Gold — A Few Rounds With Shane MacGowan is the best Irish film by an English director since The Wind that Shakes the Barley.

Director Julien Temple tells not only Shane’s story, but the story of Ireland as well as the Irish diaspora in Britain with a thunderous soundtrack.

You don’t need no subtitles, it will make you cry. At the end of the film, Shane’s sister Siobhan says that her brother wanted to be “like a great musician who saved Irish music.”

Speaking about her goals, she said: “I don’t feel fragile or broken or anything. I just want to regain my balance by going back.”

In a disclaimer after the film, Shane wrote: “I speak from the heart when I throw this thing up, I’m a stranger in my soul. Among those who will receive it, especially the Pogues family, including (manager) Frank . . . I offer unconditional love.
