20. Aston Villa’s Rise In Trading Under The Shadow Of Jimmy Corkhill
Aston Villa are fifth in the Premier League since Unai Emery took over on November 1. With a game in hand, they are four points behind Arsenal (second in the table at the same time). An obvious problem arises. If Emery can do that without a full pre-season, what will happen this season?

We already know what to expect. Emery is committed to defensive discipline and has sharpened his defensive options. Intense work from the midfield allowed full-backs Alex Moreno and Matty Cash to push forward. Under Emery, Villa have many options to create chances: passes from the full-backs, Ollie Watkins as a breakaway target, midfielders, high turns, Aimee Buendia’s dribbling.
European competition obviously complicates things, but the EuroLeague usually offers a number of group-stage opponents to rotate into. And in midfield, which usually sets the tone, Villa have plenty of options.
In fact, one of the only reasons to doubt Villa’s progress in the league is that they might prefer to attack cup competitions. Having not lifted a trophy in nearly 30 years, and with so many underperforming clubs in the Premier League, why shouldn’t Emery rely on his impressive club record to push for European or domestic cup glory?
Last January, Emery firmly established Watkins as a centre-forward and allowed Danny Ings to move to West Ham United. His decision makes perfect sense, but it leaves a hole if Watkins can’t play. John Duran is the only possible replacement and he did not take part in the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

The central defense also raised important questions. An injury to Diego Carlos early last season forced Emery to miss the team, but Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings performed well. It would be very cruel if a person loses his position. But Carlos is now fit and Villa have spent heavily on Pau Torres from Emery’s former club. A decision had to be made that could impact the season.
In the end, there is no doubt that Emery benefited from the low standards set by Gerrard. Expectations from Villa Park are as high as they have been in at least 15 years, based on last season’s results and investment in the squad. Finishing in the top six is a reasonable target, but you’ll still have to compete against established teams, including Newcastle and Brighton.
It’s hard for Emery to say he doesn’t have support. Torres is a top centre-back who was heavily linked with Manchester United last year. Youri Tielemans is a prime Premier League free transfer target. Moussa Diaby has improved in both areas and is a versatile striker with superb technique and speed who is worth up to £50m and is said to be Emery’s top target.
Actions off the field are just as important. The appointment of Monchi as sporting director is a coup and reinforces Emery’s vision given their shared history. Damien Vidagani, another member of Emery’s party, has been promoted to director of football operations. Bosses are building a building around Emery to secure his place and they believe it will take Villa further.

Watkins is probably the player Villa can least effectively replace in the absence of other signings, but Douglas Luiz is the player who has done the most and was voted the club’s player of the season by his supporters and team-mates. Like West Ham United’s Declan Rice, Douglas has developed from a holding and controlling midfielder to an advanced midfielder who can force turnovers up the pitch or create chances in the tightest moments. . It will be interesting to see how his and Jacob Ramsey’s characters adapt to Tillmans’ arrival.
Emery is a perfectionist and demands full value from his players. Villa were also lucky enough to appoint him, capitalizing on England’s reputation which was tarnished by unfair and justifiable criticism during his time at Arsenal. Nothing exemplifies the power of the Premier League and the folly of appointing a player like that for a club near the bottom three under Gerrard to bring in one of Europe’s brightest managers.
Given the structural changes, Villa have invested heavily in Emery. Sometimes it can be a little dangerous if something goes wrong. But for now, players have bought into the plan and Villa are one of the most attractive clubs in England. You wouldn’t say that two years ago.
