GENEVA (AP) – The success of Greek football has often been plagued by controversy on the field. At this time it is about the murder of the fan of Athens.

Panathinaikos owner Yannis Alafouzos missed France to watch his side knock former European champions Marseille out of the Champions League on Tuesday – his biggest game in more than a decade.
He and other club leaders will meet in a crisis meeting with the prime minister of Greece and the UEFA president in a crisis meeting next morning in Athens about violence in organized soccer, Alafouzos told Associated Press in a telephone interview on Thursday.
Stellar results in recent Champions League additions Panathinaikos and AEK Athens have set the stage for rivals Olympiakos to host Manchester City over Sevilla on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup.
But he fell on top of everything. An AEK fan was killed last week in a row with Dinamo Zagreb ultras, who had already been banned from the match a day later on suspicion of disorderly conduct.

A minor diplomatic spat with Croatia resulted when Greek authorities arrested dozens of Croatian nationals on charges of murder and involvement in a criminal gang.
Amid this heated climate, UEFA president Aleksandar Ceferin declined before the Super Cup to meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with the four owners of Greece’s biggest clubs, to discuss violence.
It has already been an important season in Greece, with Athens hosting two of the four UEFA men’s soccer finals: the Super Cup and the Europa Conference League final on May 29 at the AEK Stadium, close to where the fatal collision took place.
Athens could be under even more scrutiny as AEK and Panathinaikos are set to give Greece two teams in the 32nd League for the first time in 16 seasons.

“There is definitely a sense of unity,” Alafouzos said of the government-led talks involving the teams, AEK, Olympiakos and PAOK from the northern city of Thessaloniki.
But the skepticism of the 11-year-old after breaking out for the first time in football at the highest level: “I was disappointed many times in Greece, so I don’t dare to be too good.”
The unit must throw out the pitch, so that success against Panathinaikos and AEK in the Champions League – or then the second tier of the Europa League – would propel Greece up to the UEFA national league, which will determine participation in future seasons.
“They have fallen into zero so far and it is very difficult to advance in Europe,” Alafouzos said.

Greece is currently number 19 and has only one team in the qualifying rounds for the expanded 36-team Champions League next season.
AEK host Dinamo on Saturday for a late clash after a 2-1 win in Zagreb on Tuesday. The winner starts the second of Tuesday’s doubleheader playoffs against Belgian champions Royal Antwerp.
Panathinaikos, last season’s Greek league runners-up, have been eliminated from Ukraine’s Dnipro-1 after Marseille and begin play in Portugal against Braga on Wednesday.
