You may (or may not!) know that Elf on the Shelf originated as a book written by Carol Ebersold and Chanda Bell, and has since grown to pretty epic proportions with movies to watch and countless merchandise sold by the company “Elf on the Shelf.” . The concept is simple – the Elf is a scout sent by Santa Claus from the North Pole to watch the children and see if they are naughty or nice. It’s a hit with parents, who often use Elf to keep their kids on their toes in December.

Some teachers (and parents) use Elf on the Shelf to control bad behavior, but focusing on positive behavior allows you to integrate Elf on the Shelf or another classroom visitor into positive reinforcement. Try placing the daily visitor in a place in the classroom where they can “grab the goodies” during the holiday season.

Instead of moving every night, a kindness-oriented elf can add points to the classroom reward chart or leave surprises on each student’s desk. Just make sure your elf can be trusted to collect the prize box!

If you’ve set up your classroom seating in a desk format this school year, you can reward well-behaved desks with a visit from an elf! Each day, the elf will monitor which table is practicing listening and other important behaviors you define.

The next day, it will magically appear in the center of the table and stay there all day.

One of the easiest ways to celebrate the joy of the season with your elf (and your students) is to share a new elf joke every day—you don’t have to move the elf. Add a new joke to your repertoire every day and the magic will work.

There are many places for your elf to hang his ghost, but if you have a Christmas tree in your classroom, this is an easy option. Teacher Stephanie Rea (@thirdgradefarmhouse on Instagram) says her classroom elf has “special moving gloves” so she can put him in her tree…much to the delight of her class. This solves the golden rule of the Elf on the Stairs, which is not to be touched by humans.

Grab some little marshmallows for this fun Elf on the Shelf classroom idea from teacher Courtney Streeter (@kindergarten.with.courtney on Instagram). Your Kindergarten class watches The Polar Express and loves hot chocolate – just like your Elf on the Shelf. Of course, Alfie gets a little creative with his marshmallows!

You can leave a few “elves” for your students to find on any screen in your room. Classroom tablets, laptops and interactive whiteboards are great places for cheeky elves to hide!

Teacher Madison Hines (@spedventuresinkindergarten on Instagram) has one of the easiest ideas for an Elf on the Shelf classroom: Grab some toast before you leave the house and write a little note from your Elf on the Shelf right away!

Another easy way to avoid having to move the elf on the shelf day after day is to place the toy in a convenient location, but change the activities it “provides” each day. One day I may bring you a book to read aloud. On another day, you can bring in a craft for the whole class.
