The first thing Calgary police officer Ashley Majewski heard on dispatch as she prepared for her evening shift was that Calgary was on emergency “red alert,” meaning there were no ambulances in the city to respond to emergency calls. Majewski worked for seven years as a Calgary police officer in the city’s northeast Precinct 5 – Saddle Ridge. She started her police career in District 5 and has never dreamed of going anywhere since then.

A Calgary police officer’s shift is typically 12 hours, and Majewski works evenings. As Tuesday night approached, Majewski responded to a possible suicide attempt in the area. When she arrived, the Calgary Fire Department was the first on the scene.

Another strange scene occurred when the police returned to their car after taking the woman to the hospital. At least six EMS ambulances sit in the ambulance bay at Peter Lougheed. This is because paramedics accompanying patients on calls have to wait at the hospital until the patient is admitted. A police official said there is also a curtain in the reception area where paramedics wait, sometimes for an entire 12-hour shift.

But there are lighter moments too. Called 9-11 and hung up. It’s easy to imagine dark situations when a police car passes between buildings. When Officer Majewski knocks on the door of the apartment complex, a confused woman comes around the corner and asks what’s going on, since no one is home but her daughter. The little girl learned all about calling 9-11 at school that day and accidentally called him. Returning to the car, a group of curious children bombard the policewoman with questions, which she answers with a smile. As she leaves, she blares the sirens for the kids and they call the police car as well.

“I have those kinds of interactions,” she said. “I really believe that everyone who goes into this [police work] wants to do well.”

As evening draws to a close, Officer Majewski remembers the call he made a week ago. A man was seen pointing a gun at the driver. She was on her way to a local school to read to children when she received the message sent. The call was resolved and no one was hurt, but Majewski said she went home that night.

“I realized how little my life was worth if I was killed,” she said. “That man must have been years old.”

The mood is even sadder as they bring to light a fallen colleague from the Fifth Precinct, Sergeant Andrew Harnett. Harnett was killed when a vehicle he stopped rear-ended him during a traffic stop. The stop contained a stolen car belonging to a person known to police. There is also a dog behind the car. After arresting the man, officers decided to take the dog to a veterinary hospital to spend the night, as officers were unlikely to show up. Another call comes. When Officer Majewski arrived at the home, several officers were already there because the call originally contained dispatch notes that may have involved a physical altercation. An old man sitting in an armchair at home looks a little confused; Authorities suspect he suffered a stroke or some type of seizure. A police officer, who was also a paramedic in the tactical unit, assessed the man. The man can’t answer what day or year it is, and his arm hurts when he picks it up, but he appears to be doing better than officers first responded. Calgary firefighters reappear with defibrillators in hand. Ambulance sirens are heard in the distance.

The old man decides he’s had enough of sitting in his armchair and walks to the back of the house. She smiles as Officer Majewski leaves the house.

She says that while 911 was on red alert, she suspects they came to this particular call so quickly because it was diverted, because the man could have had a stroke.

Both 911 calls that night were handled by multiple units, leading some to question why such a large police presence was necessary. In the case of the attempted suicide the previous evening, Officer Majewski’s radio was detached from her uniform, and all the other officers could hear the sounds of blood gurgling in the background of Majewski’s voice; Naturally, he rushed to the scene to make sure his colleagues were safe.
