Nine people died in the crash of a University of the Southwestern (USW) bus carrying members of the golf team.

The USW men’s and women’s golf teams were returning home from tournaments at Midland College in West Texas when the accident occurred late Tuesday.

The university told the newspaper Wednesday that there were nine people aboard the bus when it collided head-on with a Ford pickup truck nine kilometers northwest of Midland-Odessa in the town of Andrews.

Two other students taken to Lubbock, Texas, for medical treatment on Wednesday were believed to be in critical condition, and the names of the eight victims were not released.

“The USW campus community is shocked and saddened today as we mourn the loss of members of our campus family,” USW spokeswoman Maria Duarte said. “Last night, the men’s and women’s golf teams were returning to campus from a tournament in Midland, Texas, when their bus was struck by oncoming traffic.”

“Nine passengers, including the coach, were on the university bus involved in the fatal accident,” Duarte added. “Though investigations into the accident are still ongoing, as per reports, seven passengers of the bus died in the accident.”

The USW golf teams were scheduled to return to Midland College on Wednesday as part of the two-day TankLogix Collegiate, according to the university’s track and field team. The two colleges are about 100 miles apart on either side of the New Mexico-Texas border.

Texas Department of Public Safety Steven Blanco described the scene as “tragic” and said “there are dead people in the vehicle” in a news conference Tuesday evening. The investigation is ongoing in collaboration with USW.

Texas Governor Greg Abott described the crash as “horrific” and said, “We mourn with the loved ones of the people whose lives were taken horribly too soon in this fatal car crash last night near Andrews.”

“The Texas Department of Public Safety is working closely with local authorities to investigate this incident, and we offer our full support to Southwestern University and the state of New Mexico. I ask the people of Texas to join me and Cecilia in prayer for the missing families and for the recovery of the two seriously injured students.”
