Background Low-intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), including alternating current or direct current stimulation (tACS or tDCS), uses weak electrical stimulation to modulate brain circuit activity. Combining tES with simultaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) enables mapping of neural activity during neuromodulation, supporting the study of brain function causes and effects of tES. Methodological aspects of tES-fMRI studies are fundamental to these results, and detailed reporting is necessary for reproduction and interpretation. Although many reports have been published, there is no consensus-based checklist that presents the methodological details of concurrent tES-fMRI studies.
