The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) was established in 2007 and President George W. Bush signed. The program allows federal student loan borrowers to have their federal student loans forgiven after 10 years of working for the government or a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. You must have made 120 eligible monthly payments under the income-driven repayment plan.
It was started to encourage people to work in the public sector. In the public sector, the salary is low, but the demand is high.
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program allows certain federal student loan borrowers to have their loans forgiven after working in the public sector for at least 10 years. You must be working full-time for an eligible employer when you apply. While the prospect of college loan forgiveness may seem appealing, eligibility is very strict.
Federal student loan borrowers seeking public service forgiveness do not have to make payments until September 30, 2021.
How To Get Your Student Loans Forgiven
Other good news. If you have a qualified federal loan that is not in default and work full-time for a qualified employer during the payment suspension, you can still qualify for PSLF.
Many Americans who have now joined the PSLF are deeply concerned. Public service loan forgiveness is more difficult than people first thought.
As of the end of June 2019, 110,000 PSLF applications had been submitted, but only 1,216 (or about 1.1%) had been approved.
In 2016, the Education Department refused to honor loan waiver promises (under the PSLF) to four individuals who had dedicated their lives to public service. Jamie Rudert served disabled Vietnam-era veterans and their families. Michelle Quintero-Milan provides exceptional legal services to immigrant minors at the US-Mexico border. They were initially told that they were eligible for the PSLF scheme because they were all for-profit. However, in 2016, they were told that they did not actually qualify because they were a not-for-profit 501(c)3. The American Bar Association filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education on behalf of the plaintiffs.
Why Student Loan Borrowers Need And Deserve Stronger Messaging On Their Repayment Options
If you have a lot of student loan debt, Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) can save you thousands of dollars. This can delay your student loan repayment deadline. You must meet all the criteria to qualify for college loan forgiveness, but the payoff may be worth it.
Most of the borrowers are rejected because they do not meet the requirements of the scheme. Make sure you know the requirements as they are very strict on this.
Once you meet all of the above requirements, you can submit your Public Service Loan Waiver application. You must be working full-time for a qualified employer when you apply. The application can be completed online or you can download a copy and fill it out manually.
Loans forgiven by the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program are tax-free. There are income-based repayment plans outside of PSLF that lead to loan forgiveness, but they are generally taxable. However, any student loan forgiveness you receive between now and 2025 will be tax-free thanks to the government’s American Recovery Program.
