What Is A Federal Student Loan Servicer?

What Is A Federal Student Loan Servicer? – Today, I am pleased to announce that the Federal Student Association (FSA) has submitted a request for what we call the Unified Data and Services Solution (USDS). USDS is a long-term loan solution designed to provide federal student loan borrowers with a 21st century customer experience. Based on lessons learned from past loan servicing efforts, FSA and the US Department of Education are committed to holding USDS servicers accountable for high performance and focusing on the key goals of reducing borrower delinquency and default.

Currently, six loan services support borrowers first in school and then while paying off their loans. Each service provider has its own website and communication center, trains its own staff and controls access to borrowers. This fragmented service system is confusing for borrowers, and in fact, the quality of work does not always meet our standards. Borrowers are frustrated when they receive inconsistent information about something as important as their student loans. Often, borrowers miss out on available repayment options, and millions are debt free as a result.

FSA has taken necessary steps to implement the next credit facility. USDS represents the culmination of FSA’s Next Generation initiative. This initiative will improve FSA’s technology, processes and operations to improve the user experience and outcomes for students, parents and borrowers. We are building on investments made in recent years in data platforms such as Digital Platforms and Customer Service (DCC) – which includes the StudentAid.gov website – and Enterprise Data Management and Analytics Platform Services (EDMAPS).

USDS Services manages platforms, contact centers and manual processing operations for all non-specialized loan servicing operations. The user interface and processing work currently associated with special programs—such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), tuition grants, and total and permanent disability (TPD) discharges—will be transferred to StudentAid.gov and FSA Operations Business Process (BPO providers).
